Chemical and Mineral Sunscreen: What’s The Difference?

Have you ever wondered why some sunscreens leave your face looking like you just slathered chalk on? Or, why do you have to reapply your spray sunscreen at the beach at least every two hours, even if you don’t go in the ocean? It’s most likely due to the composition of your sunscreen. So, what are the benefits of different sunscreens, how can they be combined, what’s the purpose of a tint, and why should you care?
Chemical sunscreen, often using active ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, or homosalate, works by absorbing and converting the energy in UV light to thermal energy. It’s lightweight, which allows it to be available in other forms than just lotion, for example as a spray or gel. Chemical sunscreen is also generally smoother and easier to apply than mineral sunscreen, giving it that feeling of melting into your skin. In addition, the different filters (active ingredients) can be combined in a chemical sunscreen to tailor the sunscreen to the needs of the wearer. In exciting news, newer filters available outside the US like Tinosorb M or Mexoryl XL offer broad-spectrum protection, protecting skin from more types of UV rays.
However, chemical sunscreen also has its drawbacks. Chemical sunscreen is not recommended for sensitive skin, as chemical filters can cause contact dermatitis and photosensitivity reactions. In addition, they’re less safe for the environment. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, two chemical filters, have been implicated in coral reef bleaching in laboratory settings, leading to legislative bans in multiple jurisdictions. Chemical filters can break down after exposure to sun, requiring more frequent reapplications. In addition, while there are no clinically significant adverse effects in humans, the FDA's Maximal Usage Trial (MuST) demonstrated that all six tested chemical filters (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, homosalate, octisalate, octinoxate) exceeded the FDA's 0.5 ng/mL plasma threshold after even a single application. Oxybenzone reached particularly high concentrations (up to ~258 ng/mL for lotion formulations). The plasma threshold is a safety limit used in clinical pharmacology. If an over-the-counter drug ingredient exceeds this steady-state blood concentration, the FDA requires manufacturers to conduct nonclinical toxicology assessments (e.g., carcinogenicity and reproductive studies) to ensure long-term safety. Because there were no adverse side effects found, The FDA continues to state that these findings do not indicate individuals should refrain from sunscreen use.
Mineral sunscreen works differently. It absorbs, reflects, and scatters UV, acting as a sort of mirror on your face. It also has a broader range of UV rays which it covers, and in certain cases, can block visible light. They contain zinc oxide (ZnO) and/or titanium dioxide (TiO₂), which sit on the skin surface instead of absorbing like chemical filters do. They are also photostable and do not degrade with sun exposure. Mineral sunscreens are also preferable because ZnO and TiO₂ are the only two sunscreen ingredients classified as GRASE (Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective) by the FDA. They have never been shown to be carcinogenic. Mineral sunscreen is also safer for both children and people with sensitive skin. They are gentler than their chemical counterparts. In addition, mineral sunscreens with tints are capable of protecting your skin from visible light, like blue light from your phone, which can lead to hyperpigmentation. By using iron oxide, tinted sunscreens have the most comprehensive photoprotection. The drawback of mineral sunscreen is that it is less cosmetically appealing, especially to darker skinned patients when it’s a version without a tint.
As a bottom line, both mineral and chemical sunscreens provide effective UV protection. Mineral sunscreens have a more established safety profile and are preferred for sensitive skin, children, and for the environment. Chemical sunscreens offer superior cosmetic elegance, particularly for darker skin tones. Combination products containing both mineral and chemical filters are common and a good balance between these trade-offs.
